Frequently Asked Questions

What ages can participate in this program?

Any child from birth until he/she enters kindergarten

How do I get started?

Sign up HERE and register with the program. You may register anytime online or, alternatively you may visit one of the Timmins Public Library branches or one of the Timmins EarlyON centres and staff will help you fill out the registration form.

Once registered, you can pick up your reading kits from any of the above locations.

How long will this program take to finish?

That is entirely up to you. This program is self-paced and will depend on how often your child is read to.

My child likes to move. How can I get them to sit still and listen to the story?

This is totally normal. Some children like to move, play, and explore. Reading aloud while they are moving about still builds their vocabulary and literacy as they are still listening. You could also try singing the story and that may engage them more in the story. Share the books in whichever way works for both of you. Be interactive in the way you present the book.

My child enjoys reading the same story over and over again. Does this count?

Yes! Record the book in your reading log or phone app every time you read it. If you read the same story ten times, record it ten times. Repetition is part of the learning process.

Can I count books that are read to my child at storytime, childcare centre, or by other family members?

Absolutely, record any book that is read to your child. Anyone can read to your child from grandma/grandpa, older sibling, library staff, childcare worker or babysitter. Everyone counts. The more people that read to your child will show your child that reading is fun for everyone.

How do I get a library card for my child?

Library cards are free for Timmins residents. Children under 13 accompanied by a parent/guardian will be issued a free juvenile membership. Identification showing name and date of birth of the child is required. Parent/Guardian ID is also required for address verification.

Is there a list of books that we are supposed to read?

No, choose whatever you and your child enjoy reading. If you are having trouble choosing books for your child, library staff are happy to help. In each kit is a list of recommended reads. Visit the library branch closest to you for a large selection of titles and suggestions.

How can I attend an EarlyON program?

Once you have completed the onetime registration form you can attend the programs offered at any of the three EarlyON Centres. Visit the Cochrane District EarlyON website to fill out the registration form or visit one of the three local EarlyON Centres.

My child likes to listen to stories on the computer/iPad/eReader etc. Can I count them?

Absolutely! Sometimes it is fun for both you and your child to sit and listen to a story while you snuggle up together. With a Timmins Public Library card you have access to free digital books.

Can each one of my four children participate in 1000 Books Before Kindergarten?

As long as each child is under the age of 5 they are eligible to participate in this free early literacy initiative.
